124 Anuário Brasileiro do Setor de Locação de Veículos Brazilian Vehicle Rental Sector Yearbook 2022 Resilience during the pandemic The auto industry ended 2021 with slightly better performance than in 2020, but far below the recovery expected. The global semiconductor crisis led to several plant shutdowns in the year, with production down by more than 300,000 vehicles. The effort made by companies meant that most demand was met. Production of 2.25 million units was 11.6% higher than in 2020, when the pandemic had its most negative impact on our industry. The domestic market absorbed just over 2.1 million units, just 3% up year on year. Exports of 376,400 units were 16% up on 2020, with an increase of sales to Chile, Peru, Colombia, and Uruguay, but with a fall in exports to Argentina. Sales of cargo vehicles, such as trucks and pickups, were up, while passenger vehicle sales - cars, vans and buses - suffered more from the pandemic, with the exception of SUVs. In 2020 we had a crisis in demand caused by the pandemic. In 2021 an unprecedented supply crisis caused by a lack of electronic items was one of the consequences of the pandemic. To make a forecast for 2022, the challenge faced by ANFAVEA was to consider the combination of these two factors. There will still be an impact felt by the global semiconductor crisis, but to a lesser extent than last year, with an improvement starting in the second half of the year. On the other hand, the pent-up demand for vehicles could be affected by the economic crisis and by the political environment in an election year. But there is good news from agribusiness and infrastructure investments. So, ANFAVEA is being moderately optimistic in its forecasts for this year. We expect a 9.4% increase in production to 2.46 million units. Exports will increase by 3.6%, to 390,000 units. For domestic sales, growth will be 8.5%, to 2.3 million vehicles, because of the demand that built up in 2021, especially from rental and leasing companies, our important business partners. “The global semiconductor crisis will still have an impact but to a lesser extent than last year, with an improvement starting in the second half of the year” ANFAVEA By Luiz Carlos Moraes, President of the Brazilian Motor Vehicle Manufacturers Association (Anfavea)
