121 2022 Anuário Brasileiro do Setor de Locação de Veículos Brazilian Vehicle Rental Sector Yearbook Brazil is going through a new wave of Covid-19, and this is reflected in the transport scenario – especially passenger vehicles. At the end of last year, hopes were high in the sector, with airlines carrying passenger numbers close to the pre-pandemic period. Road transport was in full recovery. With the omicron variant of Covid-19, apprehension has returned, with the caveat that we have learned a lot and a large part of the population has been vaccinated. In brief, we have a scenario that requires attention, but we believe in a more promising future. In the cargo sector, the situation is much better, with levels back to pre-pandemic volumes. In 2022 the lack of resources for investment continues. The entire budget for the Ministry of Infrastructure is not enough to maintain our highways. The solution is to use resources from the private sector, obtained through concessions, which has happened but very slowly. We need to move faster to preserve our roads which were built with so much sacrifice. Specifically in the car rental and leasing segment, we see constant transformation, which requires companies to pay attention to keep up with changes. For example, apps first hurt the transport market but then became another segment to be explored. Success will depend on vision. Are electric cars a reality for some? Who will get into the flying car market: car rental and leasing companies, or airlines? When will this scenario become real? Answering these questions is the difference between success and failure. Innovation is getting faster and faster, but I cannot see a rupture in the means of transport in the short term. Road transport will prevail in cargo transport in the coming decades. What the current government has done to railroad transport will not significantly change our transportation matrix, as it mainly involved concession renewal – and the current concession holders will continue to do what they did before. We know that the railroads have a strong link with freight moved by the controllers. Likewise with the government’s plans for shipping. We must wait and see if it happens. For this year, cargo transport should continue at the same volume as last year, which was good. In the passenger segment, we expect some recovery with control of the pandemic. Tourism has great growth potential, especially domestically. For now, overseas travel is limited by the weak Brazilian currency and pandemic restrictions. mais um segmento a ser explorado.
