Anuário Brasileiro do Setor de Locação de Veículos | 2020
143 2020 Anuário Brasileiro do Setor de Locação de Veículos Brazilian Vehicle Rental Sector Yearbook Electric vehicles within everyone’s reach? T he efforts by automakers to expand investments in hybrid and electric vehicles are clear, says Rodrigo Afonso, head of mobility at NürnbergMesse Brasil, the organizer of the Latin American Electric Vehicle Show (September 15-17, 2020, in São Paulo). “In events around the world we find that innovation is closely related to new launches in this category of vehicles,” he says. Afonso points out that the electric sector reflects the approval of the Route 2030 program, which offers vehicle manufacturers and their suppliers with incentives for research, development and production in Brazil of auto parts. The condition is that the players ion the automotive chain meet energy efficiency goals and adopt vehicle safety equipment and systems. “Automakers are investing more in electric vehicles, already selling them or planning to make at least one model in their portfolio available,” says Rodrigo Afonso. An example of this, he notes, was the fact that GM launched its 100% electric vehicle (Bolt EV) at the end of last year. During the pre-sale, the automaker made 50 units available, which have already been sold. Research with Brazilian users indicates that most recharging of electric vehicles is done at the user’s home or at work. Today, a lot of residential andcommercial buildings are designed with chargers available for use. “Despite this, investments in recharging infrastructure on highways are essential for electric vehicles to catch on. After all, the range for most of these models is at most 450 kilometers per charge,” says the director of NürnbergMesse Brasil. Afonso says there is good news about charging points from the agreement between EDP and Audi, Porsche and Volkswagen, which implemented the first 30 ultra-fast recharging points for electric vehicles, which will eventually cover the entire State of São Paulo. “The initiative also involves ABB, Electric Mobility Brasil and Siemens, suppliers of the charging technology to be used,” he adds. Each edition of the Latin American Electric Vehicle event grows by double digits, according to Afonso, in terms of brands participating. The rental market is the main customer and should contribute significantly to the development of the electric market in Brazil. “This is a trend both here and in other countries,” Afonso says. “With the arrival of more electric models, car rental trade will play an important role in encouraging the use of these sustainable vehicles.”
