87 Anuário Yearbook ABLA 2014 Every year, the National Transport Confederation (CNT) strengthens its presence and performance in the sector, with the government and with society. In 2013, its strategic importancewasoneagain reflected inall thework it did. Throughout 2013, the CNT was involved in the major discussionsanddebateson issuesthatarerelevanttothesector and to society. In the institutional area, the Confederation’s agenda involvedmonitoring theperformanceof theLegislative, Executive and Judicial branches and dialoguewith politicians and government representatives. Our participation often defended the interestsof transport companies. The year was also productive s regards the development of new projects, preparation of technical studies, and the production of studies to back up the transport business throughout the country. Among the studiesdrawnup, the followingareespecially noteworthy: the 17th edition of the CNT Highway Survey, which evaluated road conditions, geometry and signing along 96,714 km across Brazil; the CNTWaterway Transport Survey - Cabotage 2013 - identifying the main characteristics and numbers in this transport system; the CNT Inland Waterway Survey,whichpresented themainproblems, thecharacteristics of each river basin inBrazil and themovement of cargo. In the economic field, the CNT surveyed the forecasts and expectations for highway cargo and passengers transport businesses on topics such as macroeconomics, investment and business activity in the Survey of Economic Expectations for Transport Companies 2013 carried out in two phases. The Confederationalsopresentedacompleteanalysisof the railroad sector fromaneconomicpointof view. The report, Transportand the Economy: TheBrazilianRailroadSystem contained statistics on cargo handling, public and private investment, and themain barriers to thedevelopment of the transportmode. Concern for the environment and transport was also a factor in the CNT’s performance in 2013. In 2013 the “Pollutant Emission Reduction” project, developed by the Environmental Transport Program (Despoluir) achieveda recordonemillionmeasurements.Lastyear, theCNT alsoheld thefirst InternationalSeminaronEnergyEfficiency for HeavyVehicles, inpartnershipwith the InternationalCouncilon Clean Transportation (ICCT) and the Institute of Energy and the Environment (IEMA). In addition to which, the CNT also conducts surveys on perceptions among Brazilians regarding the political situation and society in general. In 2013, four editions of CNT / MDA werepresented. And now, in 2014, the Confederation continues working for Brazil to have amodern, and quick transport system that is consistentwith itsdevelopment potential.
