31 Anuário Yearbook ABLA 2013 Turismo Tourism Brazil on the way to becoming a global power in tourism Brazil is at a unique point in tourism. A major driver of the economy, a creator of jobs and generator of income, the tourism sector has been through a period of strong growth in recent years, both nationally and internationally. In Brazil, the Ministry of Tourism has been working to boost this expansion, ensuring that bills are paid on time, boosting investment and institutional progress, focusing on structural development and increasing competitiveness. Brazil has climbed one place in the latest report on competitiveness in tourism by the World Economic Forum, rising from 52nd in 2011 to 51 in 2013. This is good news, considering that the sector accounts for 9% of global GDP - US$ 6 trillion - or 120 million direct jobs and 125 million indirect jobs. In Brazil, the sector accounts for 3.7% of gross domestic product, and 2.9 million jobs. We are working to keep these figures growing, with increased investments in infrastructure, professional training and the pursuit of excellence in services, such as setting hotel quality standards, improving client services, and preventing the exploitation of children and adolescents in tourism. In 2012, the Ministry of Tourism paid off all its outstanding debts accumulated since 2006, spending R$ 1.3 billion, 55% more than in 2011. Investment was also a record percentage of its budget, accounting for 75% of the total (of R$ 885.7 million). All this was thanks to investment in new management mechanisms, which provided flexibility in payments, and transparency. Brazilians can now access the Transfer Tracking System (Siacor) and see the progress being made by our projects for themselves. Today, R$ 7.4 billion is being invested in 18,289 projects in 4,430 municipalities. In the decisive phase of preparations for the big events to be held in Brazil, such as the Confederations Cup and World Youth Day this year, the FIFA World Cup in 2014 and the Olympic Gems in 2016, we have invested massively in projects such as Tourist Assistance Centers (CATs), accessibility and signage in the 12 host cities, and we have provided professional training for 240,000 people in 54 key occupations in the sector. More recently, the Ministry of Tourism has joined the campaign to get São Paulo chosen as the headquarters of Expo 2020, an event that will attract 16.4 million tourists. Added to all the visitors we will welcome to all the other major events, we can say that we are on track for this to become Brazil’s decade of tourism, opening the way for us to achieve our goal of becoming the world’s third-largest tourist destination by 2022.
