Anuário Brasileiro do Cobre | Brazilian Copper Yearbook 2023

2023 Anuário Brasileiro do Cobre Brazilian Copper Yearbook 30 The Electrical Conductor, Wire Drawing and Rolling of Non-Ferrous Metal Union in the State of Sao Paulo (Sindicel) is tasked to develop the sector and work for growth. The consumption of copper electrical conductors grew by 7.3% in 2022, in the fifth straight year of expansion. From 2007 to 2022, consumption of these products grew by 0.3% a year. To protect the sector, Sindicel has stepped up its efforts to combat the production and sale of illegal electrical wires and cables, which leads to unfair competition in the sector, and causes losses for Brazilian consumers. The National Plan to Combat the Illegal Market in Electrical Wires and Cables reinforced and expanded its guidelines, increasing the scope of products to optical cables, photovoltaic cables, aluminum cables, fire alarms and controls, and thick cables. In addition, we conducted training throughout the country to identify illegal wires and cables and donated equipment for operations to repress the trade and manufacture of these irregular products. Currently, together with Institute of Weights and Measures (IPEM), the police, Brazil’s consumer defense body, Procon, Inmetro and local agencies in 26 Brazilian states, Sindicel has carried out 222 operations and identified more than 156,000 rolls and spools of sub-standard wires and cables, made under 80 different brands. Sindicel will continue its efforts to support the sector and combat the illegal market in electrical wires and cables, and to protect Brazilian consumers.
