Anuario Brasileiro do Cobre | Brazilian Copper Yearbook 2018
2018 Anuário Brasileiro do Cobre Brazilian Copper Yearbook 18 A survey carried out by ICA indicates that electric vehicles must respond by one-third of the global sales of passenger vehicles until 2035. This will represent an increase of 13% in the use of electricity in Europe and in the USA. It is estimated that the demand of copper for passenger cars may exceed the one for vehicles with internal-combustion engines after 2033, corresponding to more than 1.9 million tons until 2035. Our purpose is to reduce the gaps between the international and the Brazilian of electric vehicles’ market, concentrating in new technologies and updating the opportunities through the use of copper. Electric vehicles provide numerous benefits to the society, such as those related to the UN Agenda for Sustainable Development, like “Ensure healthy lives and promote well-being for all at all ages”, “Ensure access to affordable, reliable, sustainable and modern energy for all”, “Make cities and human settlements inclusive, safe, resilient and sustainable” and “Take urgent action to combat climate change and its impacts”. Therefore, we are promoting working groups for regulatory activities on electric vehicle’s development and infrastructure standards for recharging, participating in the electromobility working group with the local government and the industry to increase new opportunities for copper in Brazil, providing technical information on the installation of new recharging stations for electric vehicles. We are also aligning efforts with our associates and stakeholders interested in the development of electromobility in Brazil, in order to accelerate and to structure this market arrival and to maintain copper at its leadership position as the best electricity conductor. Other initiatives - Due to the absence of a guiding material for manufacturers and professional installers on the good practices to handle refrigeration and air-conditioning systems in the Brazilian market, we requested to the ICA information for references from international markets to develop a local guide. The guide highlights the benefits of using copper pipes in order to raise awareness on its differential and stop threats for substituting copper by another material. The project counted with a partnership with SENAI and ABRAVA and will reach professionals of installation companies and air-conditioning and refrigerating systems manufacturers throughout the country. Another action that counted with Procobre involvement was the publication of the book “Distributed generation and energy efficiency: thoughts on the present and the future electric sector,” from IEI Brazil (Internacional Energy Iniciative), with participation of the Institute of Climate and Society (iCS). Our support reinforces the Procobre position on behalf of a new regulation capable of covering the new trade arrangements in the area of sustainable energy. The book has a strong institutional bias and intends to influence government entities by bringing examples of tax models more propitious to distributed generation and a critical analysis about the government performance in relation to the electric sector. A further initiative related to the energy efficiency of drive systems conducted by Procobre involved the motor manufacturer WEG, in a partnership whose objective consists in a program of technical and marketing actions to develop and disclose the incentive for the use of high-efficiency motors, giving focus to the benefits of the substitution. The union also predicts to feed the debate on the importance of a future regulation for the market of renovated motors and for minimum performance levels of for single phase motors. Therefore, direct actions will be promoted along the decision-making bodies, as INMETRO, MME-CGIEE, and PROCEL. They integrate the scope of partnership actions regarding the “Comitê Técnico de Gestão e Economia de Energia” (the Technical Committee on Energy Management and Economy - CB116) of ABNT/ ABRINSTAL and the imported motors program, whose actions include the request for review of NCMs along with the competent motors’ bodies that may be withheld from automatic importation. The developments of this initiative will create excellent business opportunities for the copper industry. These actions, with no doubt, respond to the ABCobre’s premises, when it comes to promotion, defense, strengthening and growth of copper and its alloys production chain, and to the best practices of this industry based on sustainability principles.
