Anuario Brasileiro do Cobre | Brazilian Copper Yearbook 2018

Anuário Brasileiro do Cobre Brazilian Copper Yearbook 2018 17 corporations’ reliability and repute. Still, unfolding from asset management, we could extend the program, previously focused at power utilities, to the hospital sector. The first matchmaking was held at the second quarter/2018 and counted with the participation of 30 professionals (directors and managers) from more than 15 main hospitals of the State of São Paulo. The attendance success confirms the assertive strategy to expand the assetmanagement principle beyond the electric and industrial sectors to stimulate the additional use of copper. Another achievement was related to asset management in the base industry. We expanded the application of the ISO 55001 set of standards to mining, steel, metal-mechanic sectors and the railway transportation industry during an event hold at Belo Horizonte, when we built a partnership with these sectors aiming to guide them on the purchase, use and disposal of assets, identifying opportunities for equipment substitution and modernization of the installed assets. Shortly, this proximity may be rebound as a demand for copper products by these sectors, particularly for traction and refrigeration systems. Electromobility - Another market that we made reference at this yearbook previous edition was the electromobility sector. Due to our interest on the subject, we hired a study to evaluate the tendency of electromobility in Brazil and the opportunities at this new trade, mainly referring to the components used the infrastructure for charging vehicles, which shall request a high demand from the copper sector. After this marketing study, we created a strategic group to support the development of electromobility in Brazil for the next three years. At the first meeting, in May, we discussed actions’ developed priorities and answered which actuation opportunities could leverage the market of copper for electromobility. As part of the actions that we promoted for this market, we established a cooperation with GIZ (Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit GmbH) in order to perform joint activities in the electromobility sector. To bring electromobility to the agenda, an event called “Thinking on electromobility in Brazil: a look on the different technological fleets”, in partnership with the Ministry of Industry, Foreign Trade and Services – MDIC and the Brazilian Agency of Industrial Development – ABDI, was hold in June at Brasília. The debate, powered by a greater ecological awareness of the consumers and a genuine interest to decrease the dependency on fossil fuels, became even more notoriety after the fuel supply crisis caused by the truck drivers’ standstill across the country. They claimed for lower prices of diesel oil. The dependency on fossil fuels for transport, including the cargo shipping, highlighted the uncertainty in all spheres of society, due to the dramatic situation that brought all the sectors of the economy to chaos. The event brought important reflections, particularly on the logistical model that the country should follow: based on fossil fuels or on renewable energy. Following the example to the C and European markets, that boost manufacturing and marketing of electric cars with subsidies that include free public parking, public charging stations and tax exemption for the purchase of such vehicles, Procobre supports this global mega trend that offers significant opportunities to build a reputation for the copper industry and impacts directly on the reduction of pollutant emissions. The potential to electric vehicles would have a positive impact on the demand for copper, and we are placed in a singular way to develop and manage programs that ensure that copper will be the material of choice for this sector application. The decision of Chinese’s authorities to fight air pollution in the cities and to promote electromobility, as well as the European and American regulations for low carbon emissions and the offering mobility services with autonomous vehicles, is connected to and is creating a big impulse to the sector in these countries. That is what we want to replicate in Brazil.
