2018 Anuário Brasileiro do Cobre Brazilian Copper Yearbook 16 New ways to the efficient use of copper L ast year, at the 2017 Edition of the Brazilian Copper Yearbook, we anticipated some market megatrends and anticipated strategic actions that Procobre (The Brazilian Institute of Copper), the representative of ICA (The International Copper Association) in Brazil, would adopt to assure the demand for copper products throughout the country. Firstly, it’s important to qualify the ICA as a non-for-profit association, and world leader in promoting copper usage, whose challenge is to position the copper industry as a key sector in responding to the society demands and to disseminate information on copper, a metal that meets sustainability concerns. This year, along with the asset management program at the electric sector, which we have promoted since 2014, we idealized an award as a way to recognize the work and the effort dedicated to the implementation of asset management in Brasil, highlighting the innovative companies and people. The award reinforces Procobre’s reputation as a vanguard institution, capable of guiding the application of best practices in asset management and allows the Institution to spread the work being developed within this area to define future actions to be implemented in promoting the use of copper. The process of guiding the purchase, use and the disposal of assets to increase the performance, managing risks and costs related to their lifetime, is a necessary practice that needs to be part to aggregate to companies’ culture and from which the industry can benefit. The application of ISO 55001, a set of standards, lead companies to the achievement of assets’ best performance during their lifetime. The first company certified according to ISO 55001 occurred in 2015. The electric sector leads the group of companies that apply the asset management concept in their daily routine operations. However, it´s important for other sectors to learn such best practices and starts to adopt them, improving their competition capacity and adapting themselves to international standards.
